Living Your Passionate Life Purpose

4 Jun

Today is the fourth day of the Hay House World Summit: a free ten-day event which broadcasts a dozen interviews a day with inspirational writers and speakers such as Louise L. Hay, Marianne Williamson, Don Miguel Ruiz, Doreen Virtue, Neale Donald Walsch and Deepak Chopra.

Alan Cohen

Yesterday, I listened to an interview with Alan Cohen, who talked about “Living Your Passionate Life Purpose”. Alan Cohen brought up some fascinating ideas about how to find your authentic voice, how to discern between your ego’s and your soul’s voice, how to overcome challenges whilst pursuing your dreams, and how to follow the signs that God sends you.

I would like to share with you some of my favourite elements from this interview. (“I” refers to me in the text below).

On finding our calling in life.

How do we know when something is our calling? When we can’t not do it.

Even if we reject all signs that tell us to do it, the signs continue showing up, they are offered and reoffered.

I can’t not write. For one, my day feels unfulfilling if I do not write. Secondly, I have been receiving signs over and over again that this is what I should be doing. I often brush these signs aside, saying “It’s just coincidence”, but they just keep coming back.

On meeting obstacles along the way.

Overcoming obstacles

If it is our dream or our calling to do something, it does not mean that it will be easy to achieve.

If it is my calling to write a book, I will nevertheless face challenges along the way.

Just because God wants you to do it, does not mean he will hand it over on a plate to you – you have to work for it!

“When something very big is trying to be born, the labour is hard and the obstacles are many” (Joan Borysenko quoting a canoe-carver she once met).

On listening to signs.

I am often in doubt when making decisions – I am rarely ever sure whether I should pick A or B, got left or right, stay or go.

I ask for signs but I haven’t been very good at listening to them. Why? Because I keep asking for signs while at the same time ignoring all the signs I don’t want to see.

If it’s not the sign I hope for, I ignore it. Or I don’t even notice it.

If we truly want guidance, we must be willing that ‘it could go either way’. God could point us to A or B, he could suggest us to go left or right, he could encourage us to stay or go.

We mustn’t be attached to one result when asking for signs – we need to accept letting go of one option, even if it is the option that we think we would prefer.

Quotes for thought.

On being persistent: “If anything can stop you – let it” ~ Ernest Hemingway

Spirit does not want us to worship genius, Spirit wants us to express genius: “When I forget who I am, I serve You; when I remember who I am, I am You.” ~ Hanuman in the Ramayana

“Everything always works out in the end, and if it hasn’t worked out yet, it’s not the end” ~ The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Come Over to Mine for Dinner and Dancing

27 May

I’m not sure whether it’s the number 13 in 2013 or the fact that, according to the Mayans, ‘a new era has started’, but this year feels like something strange and special at the same time.

So far, 2013 for me has been defined by changes, surprises and discoveries. And most of these have been emotional and psychological. Changing my priorities or wishes; being surprised by my new perspectives on events or people; discovering new ways of thinking and living.

How to describe my life to you right now? How to sum up the events and feelings? I’m not sure I can, but I will try…

What do you love in your life right now?

I love that my nails match my wine and my city.Red wine nails

I love listening to good music.

I love driving to the mountains and spending time with people who are happy to see me.

I love that I can walk to any part of my city in twenty minutes.

I love having met amazing people in this new (yes, after two years, I still call it new) city.

I love that I have roses, strawberries and tomatoes growing in my garden. I love the fact that…I have a garden! I love that I have a palm tree outside my window – a palm tree?! I still shake my head in disbelief that a little girl who was born into -25c temperatures and was a Snowflake for the Christmas play has grown up into a young woman who has a palm tree in her garden.

What do you miss right now?

I miss my friends and family in my ‘old’ cities. I miss my home city which I only see once a year.

I miss speaking English and having ‘sleepovers’ with my best girl friends.

Dancing, dancing and, did I mention – dancing?

What makes you worry right now?

I am worried about my professional future – I have to find a new job very soon.

I am worried about having to move – to another city or country – again, now that I finally feel settled.

What makes you smile right now?

My boyfriend.

What makes you reconsider your life?

What makes you sad right now?

The fact that we are going to sell the family house in my birth city. My family built this house fifty years ago and every blade of grass, flower, plant and tree that is in our garden was sowed by my family. I spent my childhood there and it is the place I think of when you say ‘home’.

I think about it at least once a day and burst into tears whenever I realise that very soon ‘home’ will be just a memory.

Who would you love to spend time with?

I would love to:

go for an afternoon walk with Paulo Coelho in the mountains.

write a song and sing with Emile Sande.

dance with Shakira.

have a cat-fight with Beyonce.

chat over a glass over a glass of wine with Jessie J.

What do you feel like doing RIGHT NOW?

Inviting all my friends to my house, having a big feast with delicious food and good wine, and dancing and singing all night.

The Simple Things

18 May

Last month I made a wonderful discovery – a magazine called The Simple Things, which turned out to be a printed version of the types of blogs I love to read. It has beautiful photography and articles about lifestyle, interiors, food, friends, travel and all the other Simple Things that I love.

I make collages of my favourite images from every magazine I read. These were my favourites from the no9 issue of The Simple Things:

I Can Do That Today

14 May

A businessman bought popcorn from an old street vendor each day after lunch. He once arrived to find the peddler closing up his stand at noon. “Is something wrong?” he asked.

A smile wrinkled the seller’s leathery face. “By no means. All is well.”

“Then why are you closing your popcorn stand?”

“So I can go to my house, sit on my porch, and sip tea with my wife.”

The man of commerce objected. “But the day is still young. You can still sell.”

“No need to,” the stand owner replied. “I’ve made enough money for today.”

“Enough? Absurd. You should keep working.”

The spry old man stopped and stared at his well-dressed visitor. “And why should I keep working?”

“To sell more popcorn.”

“And why sell more popcorn?”

“Because the more popcorn you sell, the more money you make. The more money you make, the richer you are. The richer you are, the more popcorn stands you can buy. The more popcorn stands you buy, the more peddlers sell your product, and the richer you become. And when you have enough, you can stop working, sell your popcorn stands, stay home, and sit on the porch with your wife and drink tea.”

The popcorn man smiled. “I can do that today. I guess I have enough.”

Dear Reader, dear Friend,

As I mentioned in the last post, I currently – and to my great sadness – have to prioritise other activities over blogging, which means Love Out Loud may be quiet for a little while.

For this reason, I have decided to start a Twitter account, in which I will post one quote, thought, song, idea, link..a day. That way, I will still be able to share my experiences and impressions with you via a shorter and quicker route!

So, if you’re interested in inspirational and thought-provoking daily quotes, check out

Hoping to see you there!

With love
