The Right to be Amazing

Do you give yourself the right to be amazing or do you settle for being average? Until recently, I settled for the latter, but last week, a truly phenomenal thing happened, caused by nothing else but a shift in my attitude towards myself.

I have never been good at bowling – I usually come last or second to last in any game I play. I get one strike per game and usually by sheer chance. I do not know how to control the ball nor how to control the force with which I throw it. Being good at bowling has always been a mystery to me.

However…

Last week I went bowling with a group of fifteen friends and on my first go a thought popped into my head “You have the right to be amazing. You have the right to win. Get a strike!”.

And guess what? I got a strike. So, on every go I said to myself “Give yourself the right to be amazing. Give yourself the right to win”.

VictoryAnd guess what? I didn’t get just one strike, not even two, not even three. I got enough strikes to make me win out of the group of fifteen people!

How do you explain the fact that a girl who has never won a game of bowling in her life got double the points of most of the other players?

For me, there is only one explanation for this: I gave myself the right to it.

I allowed myself to be great. I allowed myself to excel. I allowed myself to come first. I allowed myself to win.

A shift in my attitude towards what I have the right to be and to do caused a small miracle. I changed my thoughts from “I’m not good at bowling” to “I can be amazing”. And instantly my body replied to this affirmation by acting it out!

This was an amazing discovery for me – nothing could have been clearer proof of how our thoughts change our reality.

Happiness is not a Destination

What makes us happy?

Psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky conducted an experiment on “The How of Happiness” and the results are truly fascinating.

According to Lyubomirsky, 50% of our happiness comes from our genes.

Only 10% of our happiness is made up of – (get prepared to be blown away) – external factors, such as money, the weather, our job, the car we drive, the clothes we wear…

And the remaining 40% of our happiness is determined by…..our attitude and our behaviour in the face of each situation in our lives.

Isn’t t funny, how we all think that a job, a house, a car, a dress, or a party will change our lives from miserable to joyful? Isn’t it strange, how we believe that a salary, a title, a brand will transform our lives from Hell to Heaven?

The “things” we believe so important for our happiness actually only make up a very small percentage of it.

The rest comes from the inside – how we choose to feel, how we choose to react, how we choose to think.

We cannot always change the circumstances in our life, but what Lyubomirsky has proved is that it is enough to change our attitude to these circumstances in order to transform our lives for the better.

As Louise Hay says:

“When we cannot change a situation, we must begin to change the way we view it.”

Are You Running Out of Memory Space?

“Low Disk Space”. My laptop has been popping up this message for several weeks. Until today, the thought of having to go through all of my files, in order to delete anything unnecessary, seemed like a chore and a waste of time. Wouldn’t it be easier just to transfer everything onto a hard disk drive, instead?

This morning, however, the words spoken by a sophrologist, at a trial class that I attended yesterday, rang in my mind: “How can we make space for the present, for the new, when we are holding on to the past, to the old?”

My laptop needs space to save new files, to perform new functions. My old documents, photos and music are blocking it up from being able to serve the purposes for which I need it today. It is asking for my help to clear it of the unnecessary junk that I’ve been storing all these years.

As humans, clearing up our system of the past is crucial to a fruitful, productive and fulfilling life in the present. Unfortunately, unlike the laptop, we are not programmed to recognise a file overload (until it reaches a critical state). We have to look into ourselves on a regular basis in order to understand this.

Our past fears, frustration, grudges and negative emotions do not serve us today. They are in the mind; they exist only as thoughts and memories. Today’s reality is different to yesterday’s. In order to live fully today, our mind and body must be in the present.

“Think of an acorn”, the sophrologist said. “It has only one thought – to grow in to an oak tree. It has no awareness of the past and no concept of the future. But it knows what it must achieve today: to grow. So everyday it focuses on growing, looking only at the present circumstances – rain and sun – to help it do so. When it can grow no more, it dies, and is recycled into a new life-form”.

Today, I will free my laptop of old and unnecessary junk. Today, I will connect to myself and recognise the thoughts, beliefs and emotions from the past that hold me back from living fully today.
