The Simple Things

18 May

Last month I made a wonderful discovery – a magazine called The Simple Things, which turned out to be a printed version of the types of blogs I love to read. It has beautiful photography and articles about lifestyle, interiors, food, friends, travel and all the other Simple Things that I love.

I make collages of my favourite images from every magazine I read. These were my favourites from the no9 issue of The Simple Things:

Grapefruit Sunset

31 Jul

The sun is teasing us; it is 9PM but she (for the sun is definitely a ‘she’ today) is still far from the horizon. In the summer, she likes to stay out later in this part of the world.

Windows rolled down, I breathe in the smell of the river, the dusty ground and the car fumes. Music fills my ears and my heart, and I sing out loud. The others pass around warm wine, and laughter echoes in the car despite the language barriers.

It doesn’t take much to make me fall in love with life: sunshine, music and good company.

By the time we get home the sun is grapefruit red and has spilt her colours around the sky. She is setting gracefully and sends a warm smile my way.

“I will only sleep for five hours today,” she says “but it has definitely been worth staying up to watch you kids have fun.”

Sweet dreams sweet sun.

I Choose Beauty

4 Jul

I have been using Louise Hay’s 2012 “I Can Do It” calendar every day this year and the daily messages in the calendar never fail to transform my day in a positive way.

Today’s message, for example, is as follows:

I am free to be who I want to be, living my life as I choose.

As I sat down to do my morning writing, all my thoughts revolved around this beautiful and enlightening message. The following words flowed from my pen:

I choose travel.

I choose learning.

I choose writing.

I choose nature.

I choose yoga.

I choose walks.

I choose loving relationships.

I choose honest friendships.

I choose simplicity.

I choose hard work.

I choose challenge.

I choose games.

A New Country, A New Adventure!

3 Mar

Three weeks ago, I moved to a new country. I packed all of my essentials into one suitcase and set off to start a new life. The lifestyle in my new environment is different to the one I’m used to in one of the world’s central capitals, which means that I have felt a bit lost and confused at times. However, once I remind myself of the reasons for which I decided to move,  I am able to see what a wonderful and exciting opportunity this is.

I am here to…

  • be with the person I love
  • be independent
  • have a calmer lifestyle
  • be closer to nature
  • discover a new place
  • discover a different way of living
  • meet new people
  • lead a more active and outdoor lifestyle
  • have more fresh air
  • grow my own flowers and herbs (in the outdoor space that I now have)
  • be in a warmer climate
  • cycle
  • spend time in the countryside
  • buy fresh food from local producers
  • …and so – eat better food
  • have a new challenge (of starting life in a new place)
  • go on road trips
  • take evening walks on the beach
  • lead a simpler life

Let this adventure begin!
